No single food, supplement or dietary pattern can guarantee that you'll never develop a chronic disease. Our health is shaped by a complex interplay of genetics, age, environmental exposures, access to healthcare and lifestyle. Some risk factors are beyond our control.
However, what we eat is one of the most powerful modifiable risk factors we do have.
A substantial body of research shows that dietary patterns can meaningfully influence the risk of developing many of the leading causes of ill health, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and cognitive decline. Rather than thinking of nutrition as a way to prevent disease with certainty, it's more accurate to think of it as a way to reduce risk and promote healthy ageing.
Importantly, it's not individual "superfoods" that make the biggest difference. It's the overall pattern of how we eat, day in and day out.

Following a hip fracture, approximately 20-30% of adults over the age of 60 die within the following year, and many others never regain their previous level of independence. This highlights why protecting bone health isn't just about preventing fractures - it's about preserving mobility, confidence and healthy ageing.
The encouraging news is that there is much we can do to support our bones throughout life. Building strong bones starts in childhood and early adulthood, but it's never too late to make positive changes.

Level 1: The foundations
These are the lifestyle habits that consistently have the strongest evidence for reducing the risk of chronic disease.
Don't smoke - Smoking remains one of the biggest preventable causes of cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory disease.
Be physically active - Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, alongside two sessions of strength training to support cardiovascular health, muscle mass and bone strength.
Prioritise sleep - Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Poor sleep has been linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline.
Maintain a healthy body composition - Rather than focusing solely on weight, prioritise preserving muscle mass while keeping excess body fat within a healthy range, as both influence long-term metabolic health.

Blood lipids aka fats (Cholesterol)
A standard lipid profile measures:
Total cholesterol
LDL cholesterol
HDL cholesterol
Triglycerides
Raised LDL cholesterol is one of the strongest modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Depending on your personal or family history, your clinician may also recommend measuring Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], which can provide a more detailed assessment of cardiovascular risk.
HbA1c - blood glucose / sugar
HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose levels over the previous 2-3 months and is used to identify pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Identifying elevated blood sugar early provides an opportunity to improve diet and lifestyle before diabetes develops.
Body composition and waist circumference
Your weight alone doesn't tell the whole story. Vitamin D

Deficiencies in these nutrients are common and can contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, poor concentration, low mood and reduced exercise capacity. Testing may be particularly important for women with heavy menstrual bleeding, older adults, vegetarians, vegans and people with digestive conditions that affect nutrient absorption.
Bone health assessment
If you're at increased risk of osteoporosis - for example, you're postmenopausal, have a family history of osteoporosis, have experienced an early menopause or have been taking long-term steroid medication - speak to your GP about whether a DEXA scan is appropriate. This is a simple, low-dose X-ray that measures bone mineral density and can help identify osteoporosis before a fracture occurs.
Bowel cancer screening
In England, bowel cancer screening is offered routinely through the NHS from the age of 50 using a home faecal immunochemical test (FIT), with the screening age gradually being lowered. Breast and cervical screening
